Deep in Coal Country, at the western end of West Virginia, a few graduates of Point Pleasant High were watching their best years slip by at rubber and coal plants. By 1973, brothers William “Tiny” Smith (guitarist and vocalist), Walter (drums), and Wally the 3rd (guitarist) had met up with a horn section of Donnie’s Gavritsch (trumpet) and Dunsmore (alto sax), Orman Hall (trumpet), and Sam Stephens (tenor sax).

They formed Ash Soul Inc. with Freddie Carte on drums and Duke Cubertson out front. The oversized group cut “I Do Love You” at a long-forgotten studio “about thirty or forty miles away,” Tiny Smith recalled.
“The place mainly focused on Christian music.” Too many cooks in the kitchen or too many brothers in a bedroom, the group couldn’t even make it through the session. “We had a flare up in there and that was pretty much it,” Tiny said. Their lone 45 was issued on their own Soul Ash Productions imprint, a souvenir of their brief creative burst.
